Playable Races

These are the races that are present in our campaign setting of Faerûn and are available for play.

Click on the links for information specific to our campaign setting. Anything in brackets refers to what that name is called in the Player’s Handbook and other non-Forgotten Realms D&D material.

These races are relatively common throughout Faerûn.
As diverse as they come, humans hail from a plethora of different civilizations and cultures, from the Illuskans of the North, to the Calimshites of Calimshan and the Mulan of Thay.

Shield Dwarves (“mountain dwarf”)
Dwarves descended from great kingdoms long lost to ancient enemies, these dwarves have built great citadels of stone in the North of Faerûn.
Gold Dwarves (“hill dwarf”)
The dwarves of the far South of Faerûn have lived in the Great Rift for millennia. Unlike the shield dwarves, the gold dwarven kingdom has continued unbroken.

Moon Elves (“high elf”)
The distant moon elves are more tolerant and numerous in Faerûn than their high elf cousins the sun elves.
Wood Elves
The wood elves are integrated into the fabric of everday Faerûn life than other elves, maintaining close-knit woodland communities.

Lightfoot Halflings
The easygoing lightfoots often give into their wanderlust and can be found all over Faerûn.
Strongheart Halflings (“stout” halfling)
The orderly and industrious stronghearts mostly live in their ancestral homeland of Luiren.

Some uncommon races draw little more than an eyebrow raised in curiosity, though for others outright prejudice against their kind may be the norm.
It is important to note that vast regional differences occur.

Born of both elven and human lineages, half-elves often feel like they belong to neither culture. Although they are accepted everywhere, they are used to gossip behind their backs, which is almost always of a relatively benign nature.

Descended from a mix of human and orc blood, half-orcs are often seen as brutish and dangerous, though they are usually accepted in human lands. Prejudice against them exists, and it is rare that any are able to ascend from the lower echelons of society.

Rock Gnomes
By far the most common type of gnome surface dwellers see, rock gnomes are known for their curiosity and knack for mechanical workings.
The deep gnomes are a guarded and suspicious people that live in the Underdark. Although cunning and taciturn, they can be as kind-hearted and loyal as their surface cousins.

Sun Elves (“high elf”)
The proud sun elves have mostly isolated themselves from the affairs of other races on the Isle of Evermeet.
Wild Elves (“wood elf”)
The elves of the deep and dark forests and jungles, wild elves are known as savage, survivalist hunters and are rarely seen by outsiders. Although feared in folk tales by the ordinary people of Faerûn, due to their isolation few would know one if they saw one, and most non-elves would probably mistake them for a common wood elf.
The drow are descended from evil elves banished to the Underdark for worshipping dark gods and practicing fell magic millennia ago. Their culture is cruel and twisted, and irrevocably tied to the evil goddess Lolth. They are near universally reviled on the surface, although at least one great hero of the drow has become known in Faerûnian folklore.

With the appearance of a devil, life is rarely easy for tieflings, and they deal with prejudice against them all their lives. They are usually descended from the blood of ancient empires who made bargains with devils. Although generally untrusted by the people of Faerûn, they are still accepted in most human lands. Tieflings are generally solitary beings, and communities of them are rare to non-existent outside of eastern states such as Thay.

These races are rare throughout Faerûn as a rule, though isolated communities (and in the case of the dragonborn, a whole kingdom) may exist. Outside of these however, these races will always be relative outsiders.
Descendants of dragonborn who arrived from the twin-world of Abeir one hundred years ago, dragonborn are relative newcomers to Faerûn. The experiences of their people on that world give dragonborn a deep distrust of powerful beings such as gods, and a terrible hatred of dragons. They are often admired and treated with great curiosity. Most hail from the dragonborn kingdom of Tymanther, a relic of their lost world.

Genasi are plane-touched humanoids that most often are the result of crossbreeding between humans and the powerful genie races or other elementals that dwell in such planes. Physically powerful and cunning, genasi are a varied race with abilities that varied depending on their lineage and individual experience. Fire and air genasi have a long history in Calimshan, but all genasi are rare elsewhere.

Forest Gnomes
Rarely seen by outsiders, these reclusive gnomes usually keep to the deep sylvan forests and have a close relationship with the beasts and creatures there.

These birdlike humanoids, standing about 5 feet tall, covered in feathers, and possessing a beak, are exceedingly rare, flying high above the highest mountaintops in the most isolated regions of the world. They are a peaceful and solitary people, with little interest in taking part in the affairs of the outside world.

The incredibly rare goliath communities are usually bleak realms of rock, wind, and cold. Their bodies look as if they are carved from mountain stone and give them great physical power. Their spirits take after the wandering wind, making them nomads who wander from peak to peak. Their hearts are infused with the cold regard of their frigid realms, leaving each goliath with the responsibility to earn a place in the tribe or die trying.
